Suspected gasoline thieves hijacked an oil tanker, killed its driver, and siphoned off part of its cargo of gasoline and diesel, police said Saturday.
Renato Yangan, 48, a resident of Tagum’s Barangay San Isidro, was found slumped behind the wheel of the tanker he was driving which was parked in front of a rice mill the national highway in Canocotan village past 4 p.m. Friday, Tagum police chief Dario Gunabe said.
The tanker, owned by Phoenix Gas Corporation and loaded with gasoline and diesel, left Davao City for Pantukan, Compostela Valley, on Thursday, investigators said.
Police said a manager of the gas company reported to the authorities Yangan’s failure to reach his destination and that he did not return calls to his mobile phone late Thursday evening.
"Voluminous liters of diesel and gasoline were lost so this is clearly a case of highway robbery," Gunabe said, adding the victim sustained several stab wounds on the body.
Gunabe said the assailants apparently used an ice pick in stabbing the victim to death.
