Nurses and seafarers are the biggest spenders among Filipino workers abroad, Duty Free Philippines (DFP) revealed Sunday.

DFP marketing chief Lui Ferrer said nurses and seafarers spend as much as $5,000 in a single shopping spree upon arrival from abroad.

"Vacationing Filipino workers from abroad spend an average of $300 to as much as $4,500 when buying gifts for their loved ones," Ferrer said.

Nurses and seafarers shell out even bigger than other OFWs, according to Ferrer.

"OFWs really don’t care how much they will spend for the gifts," Ferrer added.

A majority of the clients or shoppers of Duty Free are OFWs and Balikbayans from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Middle East and Europe.

Because of this, Ferrer said the company has come up with a new scheme that will benefit returning Filipino workers.

Ferrer said DFP will soon offer a discount rate for the OFWs so they could buy more products for their hard earned money.

"We are now in the process of categorizing the OFWs from nurses, seafarers, entertainers, etc, and from there, Duty Free will come up with the discounts for each sector," Ferrer said.

DFP hopes to implement the new discount scheme in time for the holiday season where an increase in OFW arrival is likely.

Most Filipino workers choose to spend Christmas here so a surge in the number of vacationing OFWs is expected starting November, said the DFP.
