New People's Army (NPA) communist terrorists ambushed and killed nine soldiers of the Philippine Army (PA) and a civilian around 9:00 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Dontogto, Tinoc, Ifugao, Mayor Lopez Pugong confirmed in an interview with the Philippines News Agency.
The ambush site is one of the far-flung areas in the town.
Pugong said the identities of those killed cannot be immediately obtained as other units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are now in the area to retrieve the bodies of their dead comrades and bring the injured soldiers and civilians to medical facilities.
He said the slain soldiers were among those long assigned in the province as peacekeepers and were being relieved by another batch of soldiers when ambushed by the NPAs.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), still has an undetermined number of members operating in some areas of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Lopez expressed sadness and is extending his sympathies to the families of the slain soldiers who, he said, had served the province well during their assignment.
