No rabies deaths in Bacolod City since 2015
BACOLOD CITY, Jan. 12 (PNA) -- No rabies death has been recorded in this city since 2015, according to the City Health Office (CHO) report Friday.
City Rabies Coordinator Gloria Parreño said the zero death can be attributed to the massive animal vaccination, increased awareness on the animal bite program, and availability of vaccines.
In 2014, a transient resident, who was bitten outside Bacolod, died of rabies.
Parreño said the CHO is urging pet owners to be responsible and take the right measures to avoid being bitten by animals.
Have your pets vaccinated at the least or no cost at all in a government veterinarian office, she added.
CHO records further showed a total of 7,433 cases of animal bites were recorded in 2016, of which 6,022 are dog bites, 1,396 cat bites, and 15 from other animals.
Parreño said about 80 percent of those bitten are the animal owners themselves.
Records also showed that more than 7,400 bite victims were administered tissue culture vaccines, three for human rabies immunoglobulin, and 830 for equine rabies immunoglobulin.
Majority of those bitten were 15 years old and above, or a total of 4,731. Those bitten below 15 years old totaled 2,702.(PNA)
