There was no Filipino casualty in the moderate earthquake that shook the San Francisco Bay Area Tuesday night, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.
“Initial information from the Philippine consulate in San Francisco says there is no reported Filipino casualty from the 5.6 earthquake centered near San Jose, California,†DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said.
The earthquake struck shortly after 8 p.m. (0300 GMT Wednesday), about five miles (eight kilometers) northeast of Alum Rock and nine miles (14.4 kilometers) northeast of San Jose.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake lasted about 90 seconds with the epicenter being five miles north-northeast of Alum Rock California and nine miles northeast of the center of San Jose.
The actual coordinates given by USGS put it along the border of San Jose and Milpitas in the hills near neighborhoods in both cities. The quake was felt as far as the California communities of Sacramento, Sonoma and Los Baños.
It was the most powerful quake in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley since 1989.
