There is a water crisis in close to 50 percent of areas serviced by Maynilad Water Inc. after the level in Angat Dam in Bulacan reached a record-low – a situation that is expected to last for at least 60 days if the current dry spell continues, Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson said Wednesday.

And Singson blamed this water shortage to the alleged excessive release of water from Angat dam due to the rains spawned by tropical storm “Ondoy” and typhoon “Pepeng” late last year.

“Water crisis in the area of Maynilad I believe, they are in a crisis situation because almost 50 percent [of the residents] are affected,” Singson told reporters at a press briefing in Malacanang on Tuesday.

“All told, we have 344 barangay (villages) who are affected and that translates to 49 percent of the Maynilad concession area. Also that translates to approximately close to three million of the west concession.” said Singson.

Maynilad services over seven million residents in Manila except portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana; in parts of Quezon City and Makati; Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon; and the municipalities of Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario in Cavite.
