The
Philippine summer capital, battered by floods and isolated by landslides, is running short of fuel supplies—and running out of embalming fluids and coffins.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Sunday asked a Pampanga town known for its coffin industry to ship at least 100 caskets to Baguio.
Ms Arroyo called officials of Santo Tomas town and asked if they had available coffins after learning that Baguio funeral parlors had run out of caskets and embalming chemicals owing to the big number of landslide deaths here and in Benguet province.
Ms Arroyo said she was assured by Pampanga Rep. Anna York Bondoc that 300 caskets were available for Baguio and Benguet.
As of Sunday, 254 people have died in the onslaught of Tropical Storm “Pepeng†(international codename: Parma) in the region, according to the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC).
Of that number, 196 died in landslides that hit this city and the Benguet towns of La Trinidad, Mankayan and Itogon, the RDCC said.
