Negrense students enjoined to become DOST scholars
« on: April 29, 2020, 01:55:52 PM »
BACOLOD CITY, Aug. 7 -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) enjoined Negrense students to become the agency’s scholars in both the undergraduate and junior levels for next school year.

Engineer Allan Francis Daraug, provincial director of DOST-Negros Occidental, said in a report Monday there are about 250 DOST scholars enrolled in various public and private institutions, colleges, and universities in the province.

“Our primary aim here is to help deserving students by transforming them into professionals who are globally competitive and can significantly contribute to development of the society,” he said.

Under the DOST undergraduate scholarship, all students under the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) track of the K to 12 program are 100 percent qualified to apply.

Only the “upper five percent” of the total graduating students for the non-STEM track are qualified.

Daraug said there is no limit to the number of applicants, who must submit the requirements at the DOST-Negros Occidental Office here not later than August 25. The examination will be held on October 15.

Meanwhile, the application deadline for junior college students will be on September 22 while the examination will be conducted on November 19.

Information on priority courses offered, examination coverage, selection, test fee, terms and conditions, among others, for both scholarship programs can be accessed through www.sei.dost.gov.ph.

Republic Act 7687, or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, provides scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators.

Daraug said these courses offered are geared toward the government’s goal of creating a pool of scientists, researchers, engineers and technologists.

“These are also positioned to increase the country’s capability in terms of producing champions in various science and technology related competitions,” he added.(Erwin P. Nicavera/PNA)
