ILOILO CITY -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources here (DENR-6) is urging the public in Western Visayas to observe “National Zero Waste Month” this January.

DENR-6 regional director Jim O. Sampulna encouraged every individual in this region to be “waste conscience” in order to help achieve “trash-free environment.”

“There is a need for us to practice waste segregation at the source -- at the households, where the bulk of wastes are collected,” he said.

Sampulna specifically reminded the public to practice the three Rs: Reduce using materials that can harm the planet, re-use the plastics and other reusable materials, and recycle the trash.
“Filipinos have a creative mind, especially Ilonggos, I know you can do incredible things out of the trash”, he said.

He also urged the Iloilo City government to put in place a stricter policy in waste collection, so as to unload the sanitary landfill (SLF) in Barangay Calajuan in Mandurriao district.

Biodegradable waste, especially kitchen waste, can be composted.

Sampulna said there is still a need for the people in this region to be educated on the importance and benefits of waste management.

He said they are currently conducting massive information and education campaign (IEC) about ecological solid waste management particularly those from households and various establishments in the region.

Proclamation No. 760 declares every month of January as the “Zero-Waste Month”.

It is an advocacy that promotes the designing and managing of products and processes to avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials. It is also defined as a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary to guide people in having a resourceful lifestyle, in which discarded materials can be re-designed as resources for others to use.
Sampulna further urged the public to be waste conscious not only for this month but for the rest of the year. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
