The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said there was heavy traffic buildup along the southbound lanes of Epifanio Delos Santos Ave. (EDSA) toward Pasay City due to the congestion caused by a Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 train that crashed into a barrier at the MRT Taft Ave. Station Wednesday afternoon.
In an advisory, the MMDA told motorists and commuters to avoid the area because of the "derailed MRT train at Pasay-Taft Station. MMDA Rescue and enforcers on location. Expect heavy traffic."
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino personally went to the area to help supervise traffic clearing operations.
Joey Wahe of the MMDA Metrobase said that as of 5:30 p.m., the traffic situation was heavy along EDSA southbound starting from Boni Ave. in Mandaluyong City to Taft Ave. in Pasay.
Wahe said the traffic management office of the city government of Pasay advised the motorists to use the flyover toward Tramo Ave. due to the heavy traffic situation in the area.
As of this posting, 20 injured passengers of the MRT train were undergoing treatment at the Pasay General Hospital.
Meanwhile, the MRT3 management said in its Twitter account: “We are running south- and north-bound but expect delay approaching Taft Ave. station because we are utilizing single tract reversing.†(PNA)
