The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday said it is mulling the revival of the campaign targeting drivers of public utility vehicles (PUV) who have poor hygiene and grooming habits.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino made the statement after the National Council for Consumer Protection (NCCP) asked the authorities to act on the complaints aired by commuters, particularly students, about PUV drivers with poor hygiene, especially those with body odor, and grooming habits.
“We will look into that because our focus now is more on road safety measures,†Tolentino said when sought for comment on the NCCP appeal.
NCCP President Elvira Medina said there is a need for the agency to revive the campaign which was first initiated in 2006 by then MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando, pointing out that bad odor could also affect the health of passengers who have asthma or allergy.
The MMDA chief said existing regulations of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) mandates that PUV drivers to wear proper uniforms and not slippers, undershirts and short pants while plying their trade.
