Marikina City is starting to get back to its feet barely two days after being devastated by one of the strongest monsoon rains that hit the country.

City Vice Mayor Jose Fabian Cadiz said after rescue operations in low-lying barangays, they have now shifted their focus on clearing the city of debris and mud brought by heavy flooding for two days.

"Ngayon ay nag-uumpisa ng linisin yung mga major roads, importante yan kasi diyan dadaan ang mga magdadala ng tulong at relief," Cadiz said in radio interview.

"We need to get back to our feet and return to normal para magtuloy yung ating normal na pamumuhay," he said.

He said various organizations have lent fire trucks and water pumping equipment for the cleaning and rehabilitation operations.

Donations from government, non-government organizations and individuals have started pouring in, he said.

"Nakakataba ng puso kasi dumadating na ang mga tulong dito sa amin," he said. While the water in the Marikina River has receded, Cadiz said they will not allow evacuees to go back to their houses until after the water level goes down to 16 meters.

According to the Marikina Public Information Office Facebook page, the river's water level is down to 17.8 meters as of 2 p.m. while 13,137 families are still temporarily housed in evacuation centers.
