The report flew swiftly and furiously in the news biz: Journalist Maria Ressa has reportedly left the Kapamilya network.
Ressa, senior vice president of News and Current Affairs and managing director of ANC (ABS-CBN News Channel), has decided not to renew her contract, according to sources.
One source said that Ressa’s decision was also prompted by a spat with a news executive whom she had demoted.
Ressa’s departure was the main topic at a general assembly of the news team Monday night.
In an earlier text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Ressa denied she had resigned.
Later, through Bong Osorio, head of the ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, the Inquirer received a copy of Ressa’s statement.
“There is a time and place for everything in our lives. My time and place as head of ABS-CBN News & Current Affairs is nearing its end. My contract ends on Jan. 3, 2011, and I will not be renewing. I have nearly six months of accumulated leaves so I will go on terminal leave beginning Nov. 15,†the statement said.
“It’s time for me to move on, but it’s important we transition properly and prepare our organization—and its new leader—for the challenges ahead.â€
A replacement has already been selected to take over Ressa’s post.
