The Manila North Cemetery, which is the burial ground for prominent personalities in Philippine history and ordinary citizens alike, has been turned into a haven for criminals who hide in the area and live with the dead.
Every All Saints’ Day, the 54-hectare cemetery bustles with people visiting their dead relatives.
The path of the living and the dead literally meet as the public pay respect to their dead.
Yesterday, Superintendent Aldrine Gran of Manila Police District Station 3 that has jurisdiction inside the Manila North Cemetery estimated the number of visitors to be one million for the whole day and night.
Authorities said 60 children were reported missing but their parents, with the help of the police and cemetery guards, recovered them all yesterday.
Gran said the number of visitors peaked at around 11 a.m., adding that the figure has been like that every year. But after the November holidays, the cemetery goes back to being pitch dark and empty, an atmosphere condusive for those hiding from authorities.
A source told The STAR that the cemetery, where several former presidents and top government officials were buried, has been turned into a haven for snatchers, robbers and drug pushers.
The source said culprits that have committed crimes outside the cemetery in La Loma, Quezon City hide inside the cemetery at night.
