Seven Luzon-based mountain climbers who scaled Mt. Apo, the country’s highest peak, were rescued on Monday after being trapped by rampaging river waters brought about by continuous rain in Kidapawan City.
A report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the climbers as Maripaz Llagas, 30, of Barangay Hugo Perez Trece Martirez, Cavite; Paulyn Mejia, 21, of Binondo, Manila; Jonalyn Vega, 28, and Mark Robben Garcia, 25, both of Imus, Cavite; Maria Jumilene Roxas, 25, of Makati City; and Arnel Aragon, 30, of Mt. Apo Village in Kidapawan City.
The climbers sought assistance from the Kidapawan City Investment Office after they ran out of food on Monday.
The rescuers from Kidapawan City Emergency Response Unit received the information around noon of Sept. 24 and immediately launched the rescue operations.
The climbers were on their way down from Lake Venado camp site passing through the Kidapawan City trail at Mt. Apo National Park in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato when they were stalled by the high water level and strong current at Marbel river.
The climbers decided to call for help after noting that they had no more food packs in their bags.
Members of the Kidapawan City Emergency Response Unit (KidCERU) and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council were able to reach the climbers around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
