MANILA, Philippines - The city of Manila pays tribute to revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio on his 148th birth anniversary today, also declared as a national holiday. The commemoration ceremony, to be led by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, will start at 8 a.m. at the Dambanang Gat Andres Bonifacio on Taft Avenue.

Among the guests at the ceremony are the hero’s descendants Police Chief Inspector May Andrea Bonifacio, lawyer Gregorio Bonifacio, Mike Eslabon and Emiliano Distrito.

The program will begin with a wreath-laying ceremony by Lim and the Philippine Navy. The mayor will also deliver a message.

Bonifacio was founder of the Katipunan movement that sought independence from Spanish colonial rule through armed struggle.

Others guests will include National Historical Institute executive director Ludovico Badoy; Heritage Commission vice chair Gemma Cruz-Araneta; Manila Councilor Lou Veloso; Eugenio Roy Daza, president of the Descendants of Filipino Heroes; Marsha Yolanda Roa, vice president of the Descendants of Filipino Heroes; City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ponciano Menguito; acting Supreme Commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal Reghis Romero II; and Tutuban Properties Inc. representatives Chris Sioson and Jem Centeno.

Lim also declared Nov. 30 as “Citizens Day of Manila” for the conferment of the “Bayani ng Maynila” award on deserving residents of the city.

The awarding was made to coincide with the birth anniversary of Bonifacio, whom Lim described as a true Manileño.
