KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Police and jail officials here have launched a province-wide manhunt against two detainees who bolted Friday morning from the North Coabato District Jail (NCDJ) in Barangay Amas, a jail official said.
Jail Senior Inspector Lucky Mer Latuela, deputy jail warden of NCDJ, identified the two escapees as Johnny Elip, who is facing rape charges, and Ruben Jordan, charged with carnapping with frustrated homicide.
Latuela said jail officials have already coordinated with the relatives of the escapees as well as the local police for their recapture or surrender.
According to Latuela, the inmates were having their mid-morning gardening inside the “prison without walls” compound of NCDJ.
Both escapees were suffering from various illnesses thus they were confined in separate facilities called “Prison Without Walls.” The compound has only barbed wires instead of concrete fence.
The two quietly dug a hole under the barbed wire and used it as escape passage en route to the thickly forested back portion of the jail facility.
“We only found about their escape during headcount at about lunch,” Latuela said. “We are hoping their relatives would help bring them back in the jail because the law will hunt them.”
Security at the Prison Without Walls has been light since most of the detainees there are elders, those suffering from diseases, minors and women.
Latuela also said that manhunt continues for about 80 other inmates who escaped when gunmen attack the provincial jail on January 4 this year. In that attack, 158 inmates fled and only about 80 are still at large.(PNA)
