A Malaysian national was arrested Wednesday morning at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after customs agents found in his baggage 14 kilos of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu worth P80 million.
The suspect, Teoh Chee Keong, 41, a resident of Selangor, Malaysia, arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, on board Philippine Airlines flight PR-337 at around 4:30 a.m.
Bureau of Customs deputy collector for passenger services Thess Roque said examiners at the baggage x-ray counter saw that Teoh's bag had a false bottom, which, when opened, revealed seven plastic bags of shabu.
A fellow passenger and suspected accomplice, Richard Oh, was able to leave NAIA. Oh's bag, which was checked in next to Teoh's, also has a false bottom likewise containing seven plastic packs of shabu. Oh is now being hunted by authorities.
Teoh denied being a drug trafficker and claimed that someone at the Bangkok airport gave him a new luggage bag because his was damaged. He also denied knowing Oh, even if the airline records showed they checked in together in Bangkok and were seated together inside the plane.
Roque said initial tests on the substances showed they were high-grade shabu.
Teoh was turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Unit, which will file the proper charges against the Malaysian.
