DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao, April 15 – A mayoral candidate in Maguindanao narrowly survived a grenade attack Wednesday night while holding a political meeting with his supporters at a resort here, police said.
But one of the supporters of mayoral candidate Motasser Sabal died due to shrapnel injuries.
Senior Supt. Alex Lineses, Maguindanao police chief, said Haron Kitong, a supporter of Sabal, was killed. Thirteen others were injured and were rushed to various hospitals in Cotabato City.
Kitong was swimming in one of the pools of Hillside Resort along with about 25 others when the grenade lobbed from outside the resort.
Sabal and his brother Abraham, Talitay vice mayoral candidate, were sitting on a table beside the pool but they escaped unhurt.
Lineses said the attackers were two men riding in tandem on a motorbike who tossed the explosives from outside the resort.
"It was election related," Lineses said.
Speaking to reporters, Lineses said the suspects could be supporters of rival candidates or gun for hire.
A 4th class municipality in Maguindanao, Talitay has more than 20,000 people population and one of the few newly created towns in Maguindanao. (PNA)
