A low pressure area (LPA) off west Northern Luzon has developed into a tropical depression but is still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said on Tuesday.
Weather Forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said that as of 2 a.m. Tuesday, the tropical depression was located 550 km west of Northern Luzon (17.2ºN, 114.7ºE) with maximum winds of 55kph near the center and expected to enter PAR by Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
Peñaranda said it is forecast to move almost stationary and once it enters the Philippines territory, it will be named “Marce†– the 13th tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.
“Based on the model, the scenario is that the tropical depression will briefly enter the country as it continues to move to the West Philippine Sea, moving southeasterly and will affect the west of southern of Luzon which will bring rains over Pangasinan, Zambales and Bataan, then will exit the country moving towards Vietnam,†he explained.
With its track, Peñaranda noted that the tropical depression has a slim chance of making a landfall but the weather agency continues to monitor.
However, Peñaranda said the tropical depression will affect Central and Northern Luzon. These areas will experience occasional moderate to heavy rains.
In its advisory, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Metro Manila, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Central Luzon and Mimaropa will be cloudy with occasional moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms.
PAGASA said that Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas will have occasional light to moderate rains or thunderstorms while the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rainshowers or thunderstorms.
The weather agency added that moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to east will prevail over Northern Luzon, and coming from the southwest to south over Central Luzon.
Coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest to west with slight to moderate seas.
