Leyte Village Prone to Landslide

TACLOBAN CITY — A ranking official of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) based here strongly recommended the immediate relocation of a village in Calubi-an, Leyte as it is believed to be prone to landslides.

Engr. Loreto Alburo, MGB Region 8 director, said his office is recommending for the immediate relocation of Barangay Casiongan in Calubian town, to include the school compound and the cemetery, to be transferred to a safer area to avert any eventuality as the village is prone to landslides.

He said with the onset of the rainy season, there is an immediate need for the relocation of the village to a safer ground.

Alburo hinted the urgent relocation, as recommended by his office, is to avert the occurrence of another tragedy like the grim incident in Guinsaugon in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, where the whole village was buried in mud after a landslide occurred in February 2006.

Alburo said based on the findings of his office, the geohazard condition of the village makes it highly prone to landslides — as the condition of the area is highly susceptible to water-induced landslides.

As this came, Alburo said Calubian Mayor Hazel Po has earlier requested technical assistance from his office to conduct an ocular geohazard assessment on the barangay to determine the dangers that would affect the area due to the formation of mountain cracks seen near the village proper, as the situation posed danger to the lives of the residents.
