The rallies held by labor and militant groups in Manila in celebration of the Labor Day Saturday were generally peaceful, the Manila Police District (MPD) said.
The MPD deployed sufficient number of policemen in strategic areas where militant groups converged to ensure the safety of both the rallyists and the general public.
Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim and Senator Francis Escudero attended the program held by members of the Kilusang Mayo Uno, Anakpawis, Partido ng Manggagawa, Gabriela, and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan starting at 10 a.m. at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo to honor the late labor leader and sectoral Rep. Crispin Beltran.
Beltran, who represented in Congress Party-list Bayan Muna from 2001 to 2004 and Anakpawis from 2004 to 2008, died after falling from the roof of his house in San Jose del Monte City on May 20, 2008.
The rallyists also marched toward Liwasang Bonifacio in Ermita, Manila at 1:30 p.m.
Mayor Lim and the MPD officials earlier called on the rallyists to guard their ranks from infiltrators during their march and programs on Saturday in time for Labor Day. (PNA)
