Kalibo LGU urges revelers not to smoke
KALIBO, Aklan, Jan. 13 (PNA) -- Local government officials of Kalibo urged revelers coming for the Kalibo Sto. Nino Ati-atihan Festival not to smoke.
Kalibo mayor William Lachica said that the local council has already passed a smoke-free ordinance that covers use of vaping or electronic cigarette.
Lachica said the ordinance is yet to strictly take effect this March. However, the local government is already starting its information dissemination campaign at the Kalibo Public Market.
Both the Citymall and the Gaisano mall in Kalibo are already restricting people to smoke while inside their establishments.
Local smoke-free advocates of Kalibo also hold a street dance party around the festival area of the Ati-atihan. Donned in white shirts, they carry streamers asking people to avoid smoking.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Health Office is set to air info commercial about the province as a smoke free destination.
The info commercial, to be aired in local cable television channels, will show the testimony of two Aklanons who had been addicted into smoking.
Out of the 17 towns in Aklan, at least eight towns have an anti-smoking ordinance. Only Ibajay and Buruanga have fully enforced the ordinance. (PNA)
