Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said on Thursday that the government is correct in deporting the 24 Chinese nationals, including 14 who reportedly turned out to be from Taiwan, to the People’s Republic of China.
â€Well, we maintain a One-China Policy and I think the Philippine government is correct. If we are going to deport anybody, then we have to deport him to the country that we consider to be the political entity representing a group of people like the Chinese,†Enrile said.
Upon the request of China, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested on December 27 the 24 Chinese nationals on charges of fraud.
â€It is regrettable that some of these nationals of Taiwan happen to commit infractions of our laws and we could not possibly openly and officially deport them to Taiwan because we have no open formal diplomatic relations with an entity called Taiwan,†Enrile said.
Enrile explained that from a political international law viewpoint, “we recognize only one entity, Chinese entity, political entity that represents the Chinese people and that is the People’s Republic of China.â€
The veteran lawmaker said the Philippines need not have to say sorry to Taiwan which protested the deportation of the 14 Taiwanese to Beijing.
â€We are not living in a perfect world. They can all drive our people back to the Philippines and we will also drive their people out of the Philippines,†Enrile said. (PNA)
