A 300-million-yen Japanese grant assistance for underprivileged farmers was formally turned over to the Philippines on Thursday, signaling the full implementation of the fertilizer assistance to poor Filipino farmers.
The grant, worth roughly $2.59 million, is also known as the 2KR or the Kennedy Round grant.
A symbolic turnover ceremony was held in Iloilo City, attended by stakeholders and government officials from both Japan and the Philippines.
Through the National Agricultural and Fishery Council (NFAC), the Department of Agriculture has already started distributing to small rice farmers 10,607 metric tons of ammonium sulfate fertilizer.
This volume came from the first two tranches of fertilizer shipments, which arrived last July 24 and Aug. 5 and forms part of 15,607 metric tons procured under the Japanese grant, signed last December.
