Intermittent rains cause floods, displacement of families in Davao
By Lilian C. Mellejor
DAVAO CITY, Jan. 3 (PNA) -- About 80 families in the city and different towns in Davao region sought safer areas when rivers overflowed brought by intermittent rains that started Sunday.
In an interview Tuesday, Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Region 11 Regional Director Leoncio Cirunay said the big number of affected families were those living along the riverside of Matina Pangi with 62 families or 310 individuals.
Others that were temporarily displaced were three families or 15 individuals from barangay Kabinuangan in New Bataan town; 15 families or 40 individuals from Nabunturan in Compostela valley province; and a five-member family from Nacio, Manay in Davao Oriental.
Other areas affected by floods were Puroks 5, 6 and 15 in Lubogan, Toril and Purok 10 in Mintal. But Cirunay said there were no houses washed away by strong currents contrary to earlier reports. He said houses were only flooded in these villages.
Cirunay said the displacement was only temporary because the families already returned to their houses Tuesday morning.
Cirunay said OCD will continue to monitor the situation through their Disaster Risk Reduction teams in cities, municipalities and barangays that are the first responders during disasters.
According to Cirunay, they have been under blue alert status since Friday following advisories from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Cirunay said blue alert calls were for active monitoring and providing full complement of the OCD personnel regionwide. OCD has been warning the public especially those living in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures on the possible occurrence of flashfloods and landslides
PAGASA announced a trough of a Low Pressure Area (LPA) bringing light to moderate to occasional heavy rains affecting portions of Bukidnon, Davao region, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao.
Cirunay said the current weather situation will continue until Friday. (PNA)
