Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival vies to be one of the 20 finalists in the prestigious Galing Pook Award with its promotion of social artistry as a tool in pushing for good governance.
City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) head Benito Jimena said that members of the Galing Pook Foundation will arrive here on Friday for the validation.
“Dinagyang is something that is very innovative in its management. The foundation recognized that they can use it to benchmark for other festivals,†Jimena explained.
He added that in the past Galing Pook has not given awards for social artistry that is portrayed by festivals because the focus was more on delivery of social services in the community.
“They want Dinagyang the first to be given such recognition,†he added.
The Dinagyang Festival was part of the top 20 finalists last year but it did not make it to the top 10 after it failed to underscore the events economic impact. However, Jimena said that the amount of money that is being circulated in Iloilo during the celebration could very well impact in the city’s economy.
The festival was first presented by the city government as a good case of public private partnership (PPP) when it joined the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA), a good governance endeavor.
Jimena stressed that the successful relationship was the result of how public and private capacities complement to fill whatever void there is.
“It’s not just putting the public and private together but putting the public with its capacity to complement the private capacity,†he said.
