ILOILO CITY, Aug 7 -- The Iloilo city government honored eight barangays that were recognized by national government agencies for their active blood donation and environmental protection programs on Monday.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog cited Regional Sandugo awardees, Barangays Calumpang and South Baluarte in Molo, and Concepcion in City Proper. Barangay Ma. Cristina of Jaro district was recognized for being a recipient of the Scroll of Honor after winning the Regional Sandugo Award for several times already.

The four barangays received special citation from the Philippine Red Cross - Western Visayas Regional Blood Center - Iloilo City Chapter for actively supporting the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP) of the Department of Health-6.

According to PRC, the award aims to raise public awareness on voluntary blood donation. It recognizes voluntary non-renumerated blood donors and program partners for their exemplary support and active participation in the implementation of the Blood Program.

The top performing barangays in the metro obtained the commitment of all stakeholders to attain and sustain adequate and safe blood supply.

Mabilog called on other barangays to initiate blood donation in their respective villages. He also encouraged City Hall employees to donate blood.

“I am really hoping that City Hall someday could also have a strong program on blood donation. Donating blood every quarter is healthy,” he said.

The city government, he announced, is set to sign this August 15 a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Education (DepEd) - Iloilo City Division for a blood donation program in schools.

On Tuesday morning, the city government also cited Barangays Nabitazan, Lapaz; South Baluarte, Molo; Sto. Nino Sur, Arevalo; and San Rafael, Mandurriao for receiving the Gawad EMB (Environmental Management Bureau) awards.

Gawad EMB honors exemplary efforts and initiatives of local government units, environmental partners and schools for the protection and conservation of the environment in Western Visayas.

The barangays were cited for supporting EMB’s "Adopt-a-Estero" Waterbody Program.

According to EMB, the Adopt Estero is a collaborative undertaking between and among the Estero Community, donor partners, LGU and EMB to achieve cleaner, safer and healthier environment and waterbody.

EMB said objectives of the program is to clean the estero of water, debris and salk starting 2010 until all have been cleaned up and to mobilize estero community in cleaning the estero and enlist their active participation in the actual cleanup.

“The barangay awardees were able to exhibit and render real change in their areas and were able to mobilize their community in their effort to conserve and clean the river,” it said.

“The awardees also actively supported the program since its inception up to present,” it added.

Punong Barangays Roberto Nino of Calumpang, Edwin Dumio of South Baluarte, Cherry Lebrillo of Ma. Cristina, Madonna Martin of Concepcion, Barbie Aroza of Nabitasan, Nestor Espinosa of Sto. Nino Sur, and Azucena Tabuyoc of San Rafael received their citations. (Maricyn A. De los Santos/PNA)
