LAOAG CITY—Ilocos Norte is set to celebrate the 100th birthday or centenary of Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos (FEM) beginning September 6, Wednesday.

Born on September 11, 1917, Marcos' centenary immediately precedes the bicentennial foundation anniversary of Ilocos Norte in February 2018.

Organized by the Provincial Tourism Office under the Ilocos Norte government, this year's festivities will begin with the "Marcos Pa Rin!" Literary and Arts Festival, a two-day event that will celebrate the former president's achievements and national contributions while also encouraging the Ilocano youth to develop their skills through a set of contests.

Ilocos Norte Tourism Officer Aian Raquel said Thursday the opening celebration will engage the different school levels, from elementary up to college.

"The annual FEM Debates will be held with the Ilocos Norte Debate Society,” Raquel added, citing there will also be competitions for singing, contemporary dance with OPM [original Pilipino music], and an oratorical contest.

According to Raquel, it would be the first time for the celebration of FEM's birthday to feature traditional oration.

Also included are a pop-up exhibition of digital posters and art pieces in honor of Marcos, a quiz show, a "KalesArt"competition for horse-driven carriages, and a tour-guiding contest.

Organizers also hope to put together an Ilocano version of "The Pickers," a television show on the History Channel, featuring crowdsourced Marcosiana items, as well as the "Amazing Makoy Race.” (PNA)
