LAOAG CITY — Ilocos Norte's Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) has completed its 8,000-hectare reforestation project this year in support of the National Greening Program (NGP).

Hassler Garalde of ENRO confirmed this Wednesday, adding that they have engaged people's organizations and private groups and individuals in a massive tree planting program that forms part of developing the "green wall" of the province.

As one of top priority programs of the provincial government, the strengthening of the green wall of Ilocos Norte was launched two years ago, aiming to plant more trees in the province’s idle lands particularly those near watersheds, rivers and creeks.

From an initial planting of 150,000 trees in 2016, the provincial government aims to increase the number by up to 400 percent in 2020.

In addition, the enhanced NGP in Ilocos Norte has also focused on lowland rehabilitation by planting more bamboo and mangroves in the low-lying areas of the province.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has allocated more than Php 104.5 million for this purpose, covering 2,213 hectares. (PNA)
