Hospital authorities in Pangasinan rejoiced because the number of firecracker explosions they treated up to noontime of New Year’s Day was much lower than last year’s and even the previous revelry.
At least 26 victims of firecracker explosions were tallied by the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) as of 12 noon on New Year’s Day, much fewer than what was registered by the same hospital in last year’s revelry.
The figure reflected the injuries for the whole province of Pangasinan since the countdown of the Department of Health’s “Oplan: Iwas Paputok†began Dec. 21, 2010.
There were 48 victims of firecracker explosions last year for the same period. At least 11 of these had their hands or fingers amputated.
Dr. Michael Canto, spokesperson of R1MC, attributed the much lower injuries this year to the success of “Oplan: Iwas Paputok†program that appealed on the consciousness of parents to rein in their children from going out in streets to witness the revelry. - pna
