The Philippines and nine other members of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will discuss the future of 28
Heritage Parks, three located in the country, through effective management and conservation during the Third ASEAN Heritage Parks Conference to be held in Brunei Darussalam from June 23 to 25.
The establishment of ASEAN Heritage Parks in 1984 aims to conserve the national protected areas of ASEAN member-countries, by drawing up a master plan for each heritage park, which will include management guidelines, research on structure and function of ecosystems and education on wilderness values.
Officials of the Philippines’ three ASEAN
Heritage Parks will join park managers from ASEAN member-countries, officials of national agencies involved in protected area management, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Philippine-based ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in the conference.
“The conference hopes to enhance the regional action plan and strategies for ASEAN Heritage Parks. We will also identify, discuss, and prioritize activities such as capacity development and public awareness activities to enhance on-the-ground management of the parks,†said Rodrigo Fuentes, executive director of the
European Union-assisted ACB.
