Funding to stabilize vital bridge in Koronadal sought
« on: May 11, 2020, 01:13:13 PM »
KORONADAL CITY -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 12 has requested additional funding from its central office to stabilize a vital bridge here that has been threatened by perennial flooding.

Basir Ibrahim, DPWH Region 12 director, said Monday they submitted a request for the conduct of dredging activities and the construction of slope protection structures to stabilize the Namnama Bridge here.

He said the structure’s approaches had been damaged due to scouring along the river’s slopes as a result of the recent floods.

The official said earlier inspected the bridge along with personnel from the agency’s maintenance division.

“The bridge’s stability will be threatened if this will not be addressed immediately,” Ibrahim said.

The Namnama Bridge connects this city to several outlying barangays and the municipalities of Lutayan and Columbio in Sultan Kudarat as well as Mangudadatu town in Maguindanao.

The bridge was totally destroyed in a major flood in June 2015 and was reopened in December last year following the construction of a new structure costing around P70 million.

Citing their assessment, Ibrahim said the problem was triggered by the changing of the Namnama River’s course due to heavy rains.

He said more rainfall could result to the rise of flood waters and debris, and might further damage the bridge’s approaches.

“As of now, protecting the bridge’s approaches the soonest possible with the most available resolution is a high priority,” he said.
Ibrahim said they will initially protect the affected slopes with coconut trunks with entrenched bamboo branches.

He said the local government of Koronadal has committed some P30,000 while the regional office will provide a counterpart fund of P30,000 for the initiative.

“These will be installed in the scoured slopes, both in the upper and lower river streams,” the official said.

Ibrahim said measure had been proven effective in preventing further damage along the slopes of the Allah River, which traverses the provinces of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.(PNA)
