Jun Gomez started out at a restaurant sink – as a lowly dishwasher in Australia after his mother thought her family would have a better life in Darwin, Australia, ABS-CBN Australia News Bureau reported.
Jun's working conditions in Darwin were far from ideal, but it got him to strive for something better.
“When I was doing it I didn't like it at all. It's messy, it smells, its wet,†Gomez said.
He then said his lowly status drove him to study and better himself. “Everytime I look in that thing, the first thing (that enters my mind) is to get out of it, to get out of it means you study, so that's what happened,†he added.
The dishwasher impressed his boss soon after he was promoted to head chef of the newly opened café in Adelaide.
Every payday, Jun was allowed to buy shares from the franchise until one day he secured ownership of one Hog's Breath Café, where the specialty of the house is steak.
All over Australia and New Zealand, there are already more than 70 Hog's Breath Café branches.
Being a new owner, Jun had to hurdle many challenges and prove that he was a worthy business owner.
“It wasn't that easy being an Asian. After a while being a Filipino was a bonus -- everybody knows Filipinos are hard workers,†Gomez said.
Megan, one of the managers at Gomez’ Hog’s Breath branch, said “I love working at Hog's Breath cause Jun gives me a lot of opportunities to work in different areas.â€
Still, Jun is not about to neglect his family – the reason behind his success. “Even if you don't have money they will still be there,†he said.
