The provincial government has recently hosted a lay forum on nutrition and breast and cervical cancer at the SM City Marilao as part of the celebration of Medicine Week which kicked off on Sept. 23.
The activity was attended by some 400 barangay health workers (BHWs) in the province.
Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said the activity aims to mitigate the cases of breast and cervical cancer as well as malnutrition in the province.
Provincial Public Health Officer Dr. Jocelyn Gomez has underscored the need to step-up efforts against malnutrition problem through enhancing public awareness.
Data from the National Nutrition Council in Region 3, showed that out of the total 280,230 weighed children in Bulacan, there are about 5,425 are underweight and 646 severely underweight among those 5 years old and below.
Gomez also said that there is a need to equip Bulakenyos more knowledge against breast and cervical cancers, which according to the Department of Health remains to be one of the leading malignancies among Filipino women.
Meanwhile, she cited the vital role of BHWs in improving the country’s health care system.
"They are the frontliners in the delivery of medical services within the grassroot level. That is why we decided to provide them, through this forum, more knowledge on health concerns," Gomez said.
The forum was divided into three parts-- the discussion on Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness lectured by Dr. Amabel C. Mendoza; the second part is Nutrition Counseling by Rubielyn Jimenez; and the last part was a cooking demo by Genoveva dela Cruz and high-load (HL) exercise led by Dr. Minerva Santos & staff.
