Forgotten soul goes wild on All Souls Day

Local authorities are still puzzled at a report that a “Black Dog” was seen roaming in two cemeteries in the island of Panglao Nov. 1-2. Later in the evening of All Souls Day, the dog went wild attacking a family while eating supper inside their home.

Superstitious and spirit believers said the dog was a “lost soul” still roaming on earth after relatives have forgotten him or her, particularly on All Souls Day.

Souls taking physical forms of another body is known as “transmigration;” the passing of the soul at death into a new body or new form of being.

According to cosmologists, the six “destinies” of mortal existence include three spheres in which those burdened by particularly detrimental karma may be reincarnated: The “destiny” of hell, the “destiny” of the hungry ghosts, and the “destiny” of warring demons.

As in Hinduism, the tortures suffered in these “destinies” serves to purge the soul's evil karma and free it for reincarnation on a higher plane. This doctrine was particularly elaborated in the East Asian tradition of Buddhism, in which the dead are judged by the king (or kings) of hell and condemned to fitting punishments.

In China, this Buddhist belief fused with native religious concepts of the abode of the Chinese deities and Daoist immortals, giving the dead an even greater variety of potential “destines”.

The black dog reportedly walked into the home of Martina Pitaog, 31, married, residing in Tawala, Panglao and bit her, including two other companions identified as Mira Gono, 34, single and 10-year old Jenifer Ampit.

Martina and Mira were bitten in the arms while the child had three bite wounds in the neck. Neighbors say the “black dog” could be the reincarnated form of a dead relative that have died but they (victims) have forgotten to remember on All Souls Day.
