MARIVELES, Bataan -- Flash floods hit four villages here and destroyed a footbridge at the height of intermittent light to heavy rains Friday afternoon till midnight.

Floods washed away the footbridge connecting portions of barangays Ipag and Balon Anito.

Edwina Mia of the Mariveles Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said the affected barangays were Balon Anito, Baseco, Ipag and San isidro.

“The floods rose from above knee to chest deep from 4 p.m. (Friday) to near midnight in most of the low-lying areas,” she said.

Some residents said flood subsided in their villages before 3 a.m. of Saturday.

Only nine families chose to be evacuated temporarily in the barangay hall but returned home on Saturday morning, Mia said.

Hundreds of workers of multi-national factories at the Freeport Area of Bataan bound for home were stranded and waited for several hours for the flood to subside.

Rodito Luyo, Ipag barangay chairperson, said they placed ropes in flooded areas to assist factory workers who were going home.

The village head said floods rose up to waist-deep in Purok 3 to 6 in Ipag from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday morning, residents were seen busy cleaning their houses and the streets of thick mud left by the floodings.

Smith Esturas and Albert Escurido, both residents of Ipag, said the floodwaters came from the mountain that overflowed the rivers in the area. (PNA)
