MANILA, Philippines—At least three people died after a Filipino allegedly went berserk, stole a company bus and rammed at least four vehicles in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, according to reports reaching the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Claro Cristobal said the Philippine embassy in the kingdom’s capital Riyadh was still confirming the report of the incident. He said the Filipino involved would get assistance from the government.

The ABS-CBN-Middle East Bureau identified the Filipino as Regour de Padua, 32. It quoted co-workers, who recalled how he woke up Tuesday morning, dashed out of their barracks and commandeered the company’s bus, then full of passengers, that was awaiting its driver. The co-workers said De Padua, who arrived October 5, had been sleepless on Monday night and behaved strangely.

The online editions of the Arab News and Ozak dailies quoted police saying the suspect as being under the influence of an “illicit substance.” Ozak claimed the suspect went berserk after receiving a call from his girlfriend who told him she was leaving him.

The reports said De Padua drove the bus around the city and slammed into at least four vehicles, injuring dozens. Reports said the three fatalities—a mother and her two daughters—were passengers of a white Toyota Corolla that collided head on with the wayward bus as it plied the opposite lane of Al-Haramain Road.

De Padua and two other persons who were in the bus were injured and brought to the hospital. De Padua was later placed under police custody.

The collision, which took place near the airport, resulted in a massive traffic jam.(inquirer.net)
