MANILA, Philippines—A Filipino was killed and another Filipino was injured in a rocket attack in Kandahar, Afghanistan 11 days ago, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed Tuesday.
In a statement, the DFA identified the fatality as Norbert Malana Hobayan, who died from wounds suffered after being hit by rocket fire inside Kandahar Airbase, Afghanistan last March 20.
Another Filipino, Rolando Tricenio, who was injured in the same incident, is still recuperating at Kandahar Airbase.
At the same time, the DFA reiterated the total ban on the deployment of Filipino workers to Afghanistan, as well as in Iraq, Nigeria, and Lebanon.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs reiterates its advisory to the public not to travel to or seek employment in Afghanistan due to the unstable and volatile security situation in that country,†the statement said.
The DFA’s Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs (OUMWA) has verified the information with Hobayan’s employer, Recon International, and has informed his family of the incident.
Recon International, in coordination with the Philippine embassy in Islamabad, is facilitating the repatriation of Hobayan’s remains.(inquirer.net)
