Environmentalists based in Negros Oriental are hoping to obtain at least 5,000 signatures, mostly from students of the different universities and colleges here, petitioning a moratorium on the operation of coal-fired power plants.
The petition aims to promote the use of alternative sources of power, particularly renewable energy, and do away with coal that environmentalists believe is harmful to the environment.
Engr. Trelly Marigza, a consultant of the international group 350.Org, said a series of forums on the campaign against coal power will reel off Tuesday afternoon at the St. Paul University in this capital city.
Speakers in the opening forum include Marigza to discuss environmental issues, Dumaguete City Councilor Manuel Arbas on legal matters, City Health Officer Dr. Ma. Sarah Talla on health concerns and Belgian botanist Eric Hanquinet on renewable energy, more particularly, on the use of solar power.
The forum series dwells on the theme “Uling, Uling, Unsa Ka?†said Marigza. “Uling†is the Cebuano term for coal.
St. Paul University, which was the first to respond in the campaign, has asked for a second forum on Thursday to be able to accommodate its high school and college students, said Marigza.
Also, Silliman University, Foundation University and the Negros Oriental State University have already confirmed their participation in the call for action against coal power.
Each forum will be highlighted by the signing of a petition that will be submitted to national government agencies like the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), according to Marigza.
