DSWD prepositions 5K food packs in Antique

SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has prepositioned 5,000 food packs to be distributed to the poorest of the poor families and those affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in this province.

DSWD 6’s (Western Visayas) division chief for the disaster response and management office, Luna Moscoso, said in an interview on Tuesday that the food packs for San Jose de Buenavista and Barbaza towns were delivered on Monday.

“Each food pack is worth PHP360, composed of four cans of corned beef, four cans of sardines, six coffee sachets, and 6 kg. of rice,” Moscoso said.

She said the food pack would be good for two days for a family of five.

“The food packs will be distributed to the local government units (LGUs) that would be requesting for it for their constituents,” Moscoso said, adding that families from geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas and fourth- and fifth-class municipalities would be given priority in the distribution of the food packs.

Meanwhile, Libertad town Mayor Mary Jean Te said in a separate interview that she already wrote a letter addressed to DSWD-6 Director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre, asking for food packs.

“I am making a request to the DSWD for Libertad to be provided with 1,000 food packs,” Te said, adding that Libertad, which is the northernmost town of Antique province, has a rich fishing industry but lacks rice, that is why some households need food assistance from the DSWD.

She also said the local government unit, as its own assistance to needy residents, is distributing a sack of rice each to 500 households.

“One sack of rice will be given to one family needing it,” Te said, adding that the provincial government during the first week of April already distributed 1,000 sacks of rice to indigent families and informal sectors displaced by Covid-19. (PNA)
