CONVICTED drug lord Herbert Colangco, one of the high-profile inmates detained at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), will testify against Senator Leila de Lima in a congressional inquiry on drug proliferation at the national penitentiary next week.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre confirmed Friday, September 16, that Colangco is one of the 12 high-profile inmates that will prove De Lima had accepted millions of drug money during her stint as Department of Justice (DOJ) chief.

“There are 10 to 12 high-profile inmates that will testify, kasama si Colangco dun," Aguirre said.

In a phone interview Thursday, Aguirre said that the DOJ is already prepared for the congressional inquiry that will take place on September 20.

"Handa na kami, actually, we are ready with many witnesses who will say that De Lima is involved in the drug trade inside the Bilibid and elsewhere," Aguirre said.

Aside from Colangco, the Justice secretary added that there are other high-profile inmates who will testify against De Lima. Also included in their list are former NBI director and NBI agents.

Aguirre added that they will transfer the inmates outside the facility of the NBP once the investigation starts for security reasons. However, he did not disclose when these inmates will be back to the national penitentiary.

Aguirre said there is a a threat to the security of the inmates that is why the DOJ decided to transfer them in Camp Aguinaldo. -- http://www.sunstar.com.ph/
