Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila De Lima on Monday agreed to go to Hong Kong to testify before the coroner court pertaining to the hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand last August 23.
De Lima said that she expects a word from Malacanang Palace within the week in response to the memorandum she submitted to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.
"I'm sure that within the week or so, I should be getting instructions from the Office of the President. They know about the time constraints. I think, I have to go as the chair of the Incident Investigation and Review Committee. Wala akong choice talaga, (I really don't have any choice)," De Lima said.
The DOJ chief added that they are exploring the option to get the statements of the witnesses here in the country just in case the Hong Kong authorities would insist to get the statements of all the 116 witnesses.
She added that she is trying to find out if the scope of the proceedings is covered by the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT). - pna
