The successful anti-corruption campaign of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) has resulted to P4.2 billion savings, according to PVAO administrator Lt. Gen. Ernesto Carolina on Friday.
Carolina said huge part of the savings has been achieved after cleansing the list of World War II veteran pensioners in line with the “Tuwid na Daan†campaign of the Aquino administration.
â€We’re able to save P4.2 billion after cleansing our list of World War II veterans,†Carolina said during the weekly Communication and News Exchange (CNEX) forum over PTV Channel 4 hosted by Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
He said the cleansing of the list started in 2009 when PVAO required all the veteran pensioners to open bank accounts where their monthly pensions will be deposited.
â€For so many years under old practice, the checks of their monthly pensions were being mailed and when we stopped that and adopted the electronic transfer, we discovered that many of those who were supposed to receive checks were already dead,†Carolina explained in a separate interview with the Philippines News Agency.
