Davao City’s 3rd District Rep. Isidro Ungab has been recognized as this year’s Best Reservist Field Grade Officer of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Ungab is a battalion commander with a rank of lieutenant colonel under the 22nd Ready Reserve Infantry Division based in Almendras Gym Compound, Trading Boulevard, this city.

He was honored by his fellow reservists in a simple ceremony Sunday morning in front of the Almendras Gym. The award was given by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin last Sept. 8 during the celebration of the 33rd AFP Reservists Week at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

In his message, Ungab said the recognition is not really for him alone but the entire battalion that works hard to go beyond than of what are expected from plain civilians.

“This is the result of our team efforts. We were there to help victims of disasters like floodings in Bangkal and the typhoon Sendong in Iligan,” he said.

He said it was a tall order when he rose above the challenge to head the battalion when he was also busy in many other things.

Aside from attending his constituents in the city’s third district, he was also appointed in December 2011 as the chairman of the House of Representatives' committee on ways and means, aside from enrolling for his master's of Development Management (MDM) at the Development Academy of the Philippines and at the General Staff Corps (GSC), the highest military career course.

Among Ungab’s classmates in MDM and GSC is Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who is herself a reservist with a rank of lieutenant colonel.

In getting the GSC, one has to complete a 10-month AFP Command and General Staff Course at the AFPCGSC College. This is a prerequisite to be a full-fledged colonel.

From just one battalion, the 22nd Ready Reserve Infantry Division has already three battalions.
