Court finds Rep. Ecleo guilty of killing wife
By Charisse Ursal
Inquirer Visayas

Ten years after his wife’s body was found inside a black garbage bag dumped in a ravine, Rep. Ruben Ecleo Jr. of Dinagat Island was found guilty of parricide and sentenced to reclusion perpetua, or at least 30 years’ imprisonment.

Ecleo, who was not present during the reading of the verdict, was found guilty of killing his wife Alona Bacolod-Ecleo inside their home in Cebu City in 2002.  Aside from a life sentence, the “supreme master” of the cult group Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) was also ordered to pay the heirs of his wife P25 million in compensatory damages, to represent what Alona would have earned had she been able to finish and practice medicine.

Alona, a fourth year medical student, was strangled by Ecleo inside their home at Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City on Jan. 5, 2002. Her body was found three days later inside a black garbage bag dumped in a ravine in Dalaguete town, southern Cebu.

Aside from the compensatory damages, Judge Soliver Peras of Regional Trial Court Branch 10 also told Ecleo to pay Alona’s family P200,000 in moral damages, P200,000 in exemplary damages, P200,000 in attorney’s fees and P50,000 temperate damages.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

it took 10 years and 7 judges for the courts.  the wheels of justice do grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small.  may the dead rest in peace.

Peras was the seventh judge to handle the high-profile case. Other judges inhibited themselves for various reasons, a sign of the kind of pressure brought in a criminal trial where Alona’s parents, a brother,a sister, neighbor and private prosecutor were killed by gunmen traced to the PBMA. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/

and he is a congressman!  :o

the bloody background of the trial:

THE trial of Ruben Ecleo Jr., congressman and cult leader, for the death of his wife Alona Bacolod-Ecleo, has taken many a twist and turn.

Running more than eight years now, since Jan. 8, 2002 when Alona's body stuffed in a trash bag was recovered, the murder case has produced side stories enough to fill a full-blown telenovela.

The charge in court is parricide, the murder of one's spouse. Still, it is a murder like no other because of the other episodes it has spawned.

No other whodunit had these bloody and riveting sidelights:

...Ecleo was arrested only after a police raid in which 23 cultists were killed.

...Alona's brother, a murder witness, and three other family members were massacred by a lone gunman, a cultist, whom police shot dead.

...A criminal case was filed in a Cebu town with another cultist owning up the same crime of which Ecleo is accused.

...A group of cultists were arrested with a cache of firearms.

...A woman private prosecutor was gunned down in her home.

Common elements

Ecleo's link to the incidents wasn’t proved despite the common elements: Ecleo, Alona's death, the Bacolods, and cult members.

Now a bizarre note as the defense presented its star witness Wednesday: Ecleo himself. Ecleo said the murdered woman wasn't Alona and he didn't kill her.

-excerpts from Seares: Not Alona? Then whom did Ecleo allegedly murder?, by Atty. Pachico A. Seares, http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/, Thursday, September 2, 2010
