COTABATO CITY -- Mayor Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi on Frida lauded all city government workers and the people of Cotabato City for another feat the city recently received as one of the country’s most competitive cities in the Philippines.
Cotabato City earned the second top spot for government efficiency category of the 2017 search for most competitive cities in the Philippines.
“We want to put Cotabato City in the map of good governance and we have succeeded,” Sayadi told reporters here after she received the recognition in Manila Thursday.
The city government’s efforts to bring in investors have boosted the economy to the highest level in history of Cotabato City.
“We have earned investors’ confidence through good governance and the development that changed the city economic landscape was an indicator,” she told reporters.
“If the local government is not efficient, they
will not invest in the city, good governance is among the issues investors look before putting up capital in a particular area,” Sayadi said, quoting an investor who looked at Cotabato City as among its investment destination in Mindanao.
Sayadi received the award during the 5th Regional Competitiveness Summit Awards Ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
The annual grant of awards to competitive cities in the country is an activity of the National Competitiveness Council (NCC).
“To be chosen from among 1,587 cities is something that the city people should be proud of,” she said.
NCC is a non-profit entity composed of various state agencies and public organizations promoting good governance, peace and economic stability in line with the Philippine Development Plan.
Composing the NCC are representatives from the trade, finance, energy, tourism and education departments, from the National Economic Development Authority.
Drive to reduce crime incidents in Cotabato City was one of the indicators of good governance. During the first three months of 2017, crime incidents have been reduced to 65 percent as compared to last year.
Businesswoman Bai Sandra Siang, head of Kutawato Muslim Business Club, the award will surely help further improve the city’s economy.
“It simply means Cotabato City is safe for investors and traders,” Piang said.(PNA)
