BACOLOD CITY -- Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the proposed establishment of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) training academy in southern Negros could boost the security efforts of the province.

“If there is a Coast Guard academy, there will be patrol boats. It would be a big help,” the governor said.

Marañon underscored the need to make the province peaceful, livable, and ready for further development following Task Force Buglas Orientation for Local Chief  Executives and Liga ng mga Barangay Municipal and City Chapter presidents held Wednesday.

Task Force Buglas is the anti-terrorism task force formed by the governor in June.

“We must be vigilant and prepared. We should guard every locality,” Marañon added.

The Coast Guard is eyeing to put up more facilities in Negros Island as part of its maritime security strategy. Other facilities being planned include a training center, and additional stations and a sub-station, particularly in southern Negros.

Commodore Joel Garcia, officer-in-charge of PCG, who met with the governor during his visit here last month, said they want to strengthen Coast Guard’s presence in Negros Occidental.

“We believe Negros is a very important island because of its proximity to Mindanao,” he said.

Garcia added that Negros Island is a “good place to enhance the Coast Guard system” to provide support to neighboring regions, including Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.

Marañon, for his part, stressed the need for the province to become peaceful to sustain its tourism industry, citing that Negros Occidental is the second most visited place in the country by Filipino domestic travelers in 2016, based on  the data released by the Department of Tourism and  Philippine Statistics Authority.
