Burj Khalifa stands at 828 meters (2,717 feet) and has more than 160 floors. The exterior of the building is covered with approximately 120,000 square meters (1.29 million sq ft) of cladding made up of reflective glazing, aluminum, and textured stainless steel panels.
To maintain the pristine appearance of this massive glass facade, 24,000 individual glass panels need to be regularly cleaned.
According to Emaar Properties, the developer of the tower, a team of 36 highly trained window cleaners are employed for this monumental task.
These cleaners work using specialized telescopic and mechanical equipment, including track-mounted platforms and ropes, to access the glass surfaces, which are often curved or positioned at steep angles.
Each cleaning cycle around the building’s entire exterior takes roughly three months, depending on weather conditions like sandstorms and high winds.
Because Dubai’s desert environment leads to rapid accumulation of dust and dirt, this cleaning process is repeated four times annually — essentially meaning the cleaning team is almost always working.
The cleaning process is a logistical feat in itself, requiring intense coordination, adherence to safety protocols, and technical skill, especially given the height and curvature of the structure.
