BAGUIO CITY, August 7 – The City Veterinarian Office (CVO) has given an assurance that meat sold in the city’s public market is safe for human consumption.
City Veterinary Office Chief Dr. Brigit Piok, during Monday's flag raising ceremony at the City Hall, said they conduct regular inspection of the meat being sold to the public. The inspections are done from the time food-animals are brought for slaughter at the city’s abattoir on Magsaysay Avenue and other accredited facilities until they are brought to the public market as meat.
She reported that with the daily inspection, the inspectors were able to find animals which are not safe to be butchered and the meat, sold for human consumption.
Piok said a total of 273,980 heads of animals passed for slaughter at the city-owned abbatoir, yielding 4,996 tons of meat. Of the number, they condemned some 1,345 kilograms of meat that did not pass the requirement of safe, hygienic and healthy meat that can be eaten by humans without being infected with any illness.
Those condemned were properly disposed of to prevent the possibility of their being recycled and brought to the market for sale.
Piok added that at the city market, some “7,091 tons of meat and 5,143 tons of fish were inspected and have passed for public sale.” But through the networking with other offices that monitor the sale, proper and hygienic handling of meat, the task force composed of the police, National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), city treasury office, Health Services Office (HSO), permits and licensing office and the CVO, warning was issued to 15 violators of meat inspection rules and regulations.
Also, confiscated were 262 kilograms of meat and 100 kilograms of fish which were found unfit for public sale and consumption.
